What is Sadaqah?
Sadaqah (صدقة) is voluntary charity in Islam — any act of giving, kindness, or generosity done sincerely for the sake of Allah. Unlike Zakat, which is obligatory on eligible wealth, Sadaqah is entirely voluntary and has no minimum amount.
Forms of Sadaqah
- Financial giving — Donating money to those in need, the masjid, or charitable causes.
- Feeding others — Providing food to the poor, neighbours, or guests.
- Kind words & smiles — Even a smile to your brother or sister is considered Sadaqah.
- Removing harm — Clearing an obstacle from the road is Sadaqah.
- Sharing knowledge — Teaching something beneficial is a form of ongoing Sadaqah.
Why Plan Your Sadaqah?
Consistency is one of the most beloved qualities in worship. A small, regular act of charity given consistently is more beloved than a large one-off donation. Planning your Sadaqah in advance helps you stay committed, budget thoughtfully, and build a habit of generosity.
Sadaqah Jariyah — Ongoing Charity
Sadaqah Jariyah is charity whose benefit continues after death — such as building a well, funding a school, or planting a tree. Consider including such acts in your long-term Sadaqah planning alongside daily and weekly commitments.
